Nighthawks Soar Over Eagles
Tuesday evening's match-up between Newbury College and Daniel Webster College marked the first ever match between the two institutions and the Nighthawks handed the Eagles their first NECC loss of the year, 3-0.
Junior Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) played an essential role in the team's victory. The Nighthawks middle hitter sealed the second set with a kill assisted by Matt Talamantes (Sylmar, CA/Viewpoint) following his only block of the game just a play before. Thomas finished the game with seven kills, second to senior Bryan McDermand (Palantine, IL/Montini Catholic) who led Newbury with eight kills.
In their first year as a varsity sport, freshman Chris Shannon (Ronkonoma, NY/North Sachem) led the Eagles with eight kills while fellow freshman Ian Catenzaro (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) contributed with a team-high seven digs. Junior Eric Smith (Clay, NY/Cicero/N.Syracuse) also added 14 assists in the loss.
With the win the Nighthawks improved to 17-5 and 4-1 in the NECC while the Eagles fall to 3-7 and 2-1 in conference play. Newbury will return to action next week as they head to the west coast for Spring Break. Their next home game will be March 21 in a tri-match with Southern Vermont College and Lesley University at 11am.
