Wildcats Claw Past Nighthawks
The Newbury College men’s tennis team fell to NECC conference opponent Wheelock College today 6-3, in Chestnut Hill, MA. Wilson Chang (Lee, MA) led the way for the Wildcats picking up victories in both number one singles and number one doubles.
In the number one singles spot, Wheelock’s Chang defeated the Nighthawk’s Ben Weiner (Barrington, RI) in a hard fought match, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, while teammate Bobby Venning (Greenfield, NH) defeated Tim Anderson (Plaistow, NH) 6-2, 6-0 in the second singles spot. In fourth singles, Newbury’s Gerard Font-Gaventos (Barcelona, Spain) picked up his first win of the season defeating Jeff Silveria (Wilmington, MA) 7-5, 6-2, while teammate Alex Amylon (Scituate, RI) also picked up his first victory of the season defeating Lauren Webber (Falmouth, MA) 6-3, 7-5.
In doubles play, Newbury’s Amylon went on to pick up his second victory of the season with teammate Marc Jean-Jacques (Franklin Square, NY) as they defeated Wheelock’s Silveria and Irene Gonzalez (Madrid, Spain) by a score of 8-3.
With the victory Wheelock improves their record to 2-3 (2-2 NECC), while the Nighthawks fall to 0-6 (0-4 NECC) and will look to pick up their first win of the season when they face Becker College on Saturday April 16, 2011.
