Newbury drops non-conference match to Rhode Island
The Newbury College men’s tennis team fell to a tough non-conference Rhode Island College team Sunday afternoon, 9-0. Anchormen senior Nathan Rebello (Pawtucket, R.I./Tolman) partnered with freshman Alex Werchadlo (Woonsocket, R.I./Cumberland) to sweep first doubles 8-0 before Rebello took first singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Rhode Island came out of the gate firing sweeping doubles, 3-0. Anchormen senior Mike Aiello (Scituate, R.I./Scituate) and freshman Kyle Kelaghan (East Greenwhich, R.I./East Greenwhich)followed up Rebelllo and Werchadlo and swept second doubles, 8-0 while Rhode Island’s third double competition completed the sweep with another 8-0 victory
Freshman Gerard Font-Raventos (Barcelona, Spain/Foxcroft Academy) was hitting the ball well in his second collegiate tennis match playing second singles against Werchadlo. He kept the Rhode Island freshman on his toes for the majority of the match before falling 6-0 in two sets.
Classmate Michael Scibelli (Monson, Mass./Monson) was solid against Anchorman junior Ted James (West Greenwich, R.I./Bishop Hendricken). After falling to James 6-0 in the first set, Scibelli was resilient winning two games in set two. Midway through first singles, junior Benjamin Weiner (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) registered a remarkable ace against Rebello.
Rhode Island climbs back to .500 with the victory at 2-2 on the season while Newbury drops to 0-2 in the loss. The Nighthawks return the courts on Tuesday April 5th when they face New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) foe Wheelock College on the road.
