Weiner ends Season on a High Note
The Newbury College men’s tennis team fell to conference opponent Becker College this afternoon 8-1, in the team’s final match of the season. Despite the loss, the Nighthawks’ Benjamin Weiner (Barrington, RI) defeated Becker’s Jake Gilbert (Huntington Beach, CA) 6-4, 6-4 to keep his hopes alive for a berth in the NECC tournament this weekend.
In doubles play, Becker swept all three matches, as Gilbert and teammate Brain Piquette (Agawam, MA) defeated Weiner and Tim Anderson, 6-8, while teammates Tim Howard (Paxton, MA) and Branden Parkhouse (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) defeated Jarryl McKey (Brooklyn, NY) and Sean Haight, 8-0.
Singles play would provide the excitement for the Nighthawks, as they watched Weiner battle for every point in the final match to finish on the day. Weiner would go on to defeat Gilbert in straight sets for the second time this season. Prior to the conclusion of the first singles match, Becker would sweep the remaining singles matches as Howard, Parkhouse, Matt Graham (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) and Josh Rasmussen (Mission Viejo, CA) would all pick up their second victories of the day.
Becker College climbs back to .500 in the conference with the victory at 4-4 in the NECC and 5-8 overall, while Newbury drops to 0-10 for the season. The Nighthawks will wait to hear if teammate Weiner has qualified for the NECC tournament when the brackets are released later this week.
