Wildcats Edge Past Nighthawks, 6-3
The Newbury College men’s tennis team fell to Wheelock College, 6-3, Tuesday afternoon. Junior Wilson Chang (Lee, MA/Lee) helped the Wildcats to their first victory of the season winning his singles match in three sets (7-6, 6-7, 6-0).
Senior Nicholas Sehovich (Pelham, NH/Pelham) and doubles partner senior Ryan Sevieri (Canton, MA/Canton) took Chang and sophomore Robert Venning (Greenfield, NH/Con-Val Regional) to 8-8 in their doubles competition, but lost the tiebreaker, 9-7. In his singles match, Sehovich battled tough. Chang won the first set via the tie-break, 7-6 but the New Hampshire native evened up the match, taking the second set, 7-6 before falling 6-0 in the third set.
Sophomore Benjamin Weiner (Barrington, RI/Barrington) and senior Mike Foley (Oxford, ME/Oxford Hills Comprehensive) played solid for the Nighthawks in the loss. Not only did both of them sweep their singles match but they teamed up to defeat seniors Katherine Needham (North Conway, NH/Kennett) and Jessi Ritucci (Holliston, MA/Holliston), 8-5 in doubles. Weiner defeated Needham in singles completion 6-4, 6-0 while Foley defeated junior Kevin Kareckas (South Berwick, ME/Marshwood), 6-4, 6-3, for his first collegiate match victory.
The loss drops the Nighthawks to 0-6 on the season and 0-3 in the conference while the Wildcats improve to 1-2. Newbury returns to the courts Friday April 9th when they host Albertus Magnus College at 3:30 PM.
