Sehovich, Sevieris First Doubles Win Not Enough; Nighthawks Fall
The Newbury College men’s tennis team fell to UMass –Dartmouth Wednesday afternoon, 8-1. Led by senior Ken Sims (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford), the Corsairs swept the singles portion of the contest en route to their first victory of the season.
Seniors Nicholas Sehovich (Pelham, NH/Pelham) and Ryan Sevieri (Canton, MA/Canton) won their first match of the season in the doubles competition. After taking the early 6-2 set lead, sophomore Mike Fink (Sagamore Beach, MA/Sturgis Charter School) and Steve Leavitt (Worcester, MA/Quinsigamond Community College) mounted a comeback to take the 7-6. But Sehovich and Sevieri held off the Corsairs earning the lone Newbury win with a 9-7 match victory.
Sophomore Benjamin Weiner (Barrington, RI/Barrington) was also solid day in his singles match against UMass sophomore Brian Lui (Medfield, MA/Medfield). Weiner opened the match with a 6-4 win in set one before falling in the second and third sets, 6-3 and 6-4, respectively.
Freshmen Mike Giaquinto (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth) put together a solid outing, sweeping his singles match as well as his doubles match along with teammate sophomore Joe Mastrisciano (Westport, MA/Westport).
The Nighthawks drop their second game of the season and fall to 0-2 on the year. They will return to courts Tuesday March 30th when they travel to Becker College to face the Hawks.
