Mitchell Clinches Championship with Win over Newbury
MYSTIC, Conn. – The Mitchell College men’s tennis clinched its second straight NECC Championship on Thursday afternoon with a 9-0 victory over Newbury College in a match that was moved to Mystic Indoor Tennis due to rain.
The Mariners improved to 9-0 overall and 7-0 in NECC play. The conference title is determined solely through regular season play. Newbury dropped to 0-10 overall and 0-5 in the NECC.
Mitchell swept through the doubles before taking all six singles matches in straight sets. Sophomore Kyle Carmona (Norwich, Conn.) defeated Nicholas Sehovich (Pelham, N.H.) 6-0, 6-1 at the top spot while senior Chris White (Marshfield, Mass.) triumphed 6-2, 6-1 over Matt Talamantes at No. 4. Junior Adam Samuels (New Rochelle, N.Y.) won 6-0, 6-2 over Mike Foley (Oxford, Maine) at No. 5 while freshman Rocco Devona (Waterford, Conn.), sophomore Tyler Engleberg (Niantic, Conn.) and freshman Alamin Ripon (Bristol, Conn.) each posted 6-0, 6-0 victories at the No. 2, 3 and 6 spots, respectively.
Newbury will next host Lesley University on Saturday, April 24 at noon. Mitchell returns to action at Wheelock College on Saturday at noon.
