Nighthawks Fall To Mariners in NECC Opener
The Newbury College men’s tennis team was defeated by conference foe Mitchell College, 9-0, Saturday afternoon in their New England Collegiate Conference opener. Sophomore Kyle Carmona (Norwich, CT/Norwich Free Academy) helped lead the Mariners to their first victory of the season by sweeping both his singles and doubles match.
Sophomore Benjamin Weiner (Barrington, RI/Barrington) played solid for the Nighthawks despite the loss. Alongside doubles partner senior Mike Foley (Oxford, ME/Oxford Hills Comprehensive) , Weiner produced three games before falling, 8-3. In singles he took sophomore Aaron Small (Westerly, RI/Westerly) to three sets after winning the first set 6-4. Senior Ryan Sevieri (Canton, MA/Canton) also played well in the loss picking up four game wins in his singles match.
Freshman Alamin Ripon (Bristol, CT) swept both of his singles match and doubles competition along with Small for Mitchell in the victory. Senior Chris White (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) also came away with the sweep in singles.
The loss drops the Nighthawks to 0-1 in the conference and 0-3 overall while the Mariners improve to 1-0. Newbury returns to the courts on Tuesday March 30th when they travel to Becker College.
