Nighthawks Shut Out By Lions In Home Opener
The Newbury College men’s tennis team lost their home opener against Emerson College, 9-0, Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Mark Jackman (Miami, FL/Gulliver Prep) helped the Lions to the sweep with an 8-0 victory in doubles competition and won his singles match in two sets, 6-4 and 6-1.
In their first match of the season, the Nighthawks played well against a tough Lions team. Emerson swept the doubles competition with three 8-0 victories. Junior Will Abeles (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown), senior Morgan Crossley (Barrington, RI/Barrington), freshmen Matt Lowe (Seattle , WA/Nathan Hale) and Dan Lapidus (San Diego, CA/La Jolla) swept their respective singles completion in six sets.
Senior Nicholas Sehovich (Pelham, NH/Pelham) was solid for the Nighthawks in the number spot recording four aces throughout his singles match. In his first set, he took Jackman to 10 games before falling 4-6. Fellow senior Mike Foley (Oxford, ME/Oxford Hills Comprehensive) also played well, winning two games in his first tennis match of his career.
The loss drops the Nighthawks to 0-1 on the season while the Lions improve to 2-1. Newbury returns to the courts on Wednesday March 24th when they square off in a non-conference game against UMass Dartmouth.
