Lions Sweep Nighthawks, 9-0
The Newbury College men's tennis team lost a tough non-conference game to a strong Emerson College team, 9-0, Thursday afternoon. The Lions were led by senior Brant Buckley (Chester Springs, PA/Owen J. Roberts), with a sweep over Nighthawks junior Nick Sehovich (Pelham, NH/Pelham) in singles, which Emerson took 6-0.
Sophomore Michael Nourie (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown Friends) and Ken Nikravesh (Geneva, Switzerland/International School) paved the way for Emerson in doubles. The two Lions swept Nighthawk freshmen Matt O'Donnell (Vernon, CT/Rockville) and Ross Kaye (Wayland, MA/Minuteman Regional), 8-0 en route to an Emerson 3-0 sweep.
Newbury freshman Benjamin Weiner (Barrington, RI/Barrington) held his own against Emerson freshman Brandon Sommers (Minneapolis, MN/Eastview). Weiner won a team-high three games in the first set of his singles match.
The loss drops the Nighthawks to 0-3 on the young season. Newbury will resume New England Collegiate Conference play as they travel to Mitchell College on Saturday April 4. Their next home game will be Monday April 6 against Eastern Nazarene College at 4:00pm.
