Anna Maria Pushes Past Newbury
The Newbury College men's tennis team lost to Anna Maria College 5-4 Saturday afternoon. Joshua Proulx (Southbridge, MA/Southbridge) and Jesus Torres (Southbridge, MA/Southbridge) led the Amcats to their third victory of the season with a 9-7 win in the third doubles match after the two teams tied 3-3 in singles.
Nighthawk freshman Benjamin Weiner (Barrington, RI/Barrington) won 11 straight games to shut down Proulx 2-0 in singles. After taking Proulx to 12 games in the first set, Weiner smoked him in the second set 6-1. Junior Nick Sehovich (Pelham, NH/Pelham) and sophomore Matt Talamantes (Sylmar, CA/Viewpoint) added two wins as Newbury tied Anna Maria 3-3 in singles.
Freshmen Matt O'Donnell (Vernon, CT/Rockville) and Ross Kaye (Wayland, MA/Minuteman Regional) had the lone doubles victory of the day, defeating Mike Dandurand (Warwick, RI/Pilgrim) and Haakim Ferguson (Boston, MA/Marianapolis).
In their respective singles matches, Dandurand and Ferguson were solid for the Amcats. Dandurand defeated junior Ryan Sevieri (Canton, MA/Canton) 6-1 and 6-2 while Ferguson to the 6-2 and 6-0 sweep over Kaye.
With the loss Newbury falls to 1-10 on the season while Anna Maria improves to 3-8. The Nighthawks will return to the courts tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Worcester to face the Becker College Hawks at 12:00pm. Their last home match of the season will be on Tuesday against Wheelock College at 4:00pm.
