HENNIKER, N.H.—New England College senior forward Michael Skarbelis (North Andover, Mass.) registered a hat-trick in a 4-0 win in non-conference win against Newbury College on Sunday afternoon. The win evens the Pilgrims at 3-3-2 while the loss drops Newbury to 3-6.
After a conference win over Becker yesterday, Newbury had few answers for Skarbelis who scored New England College's first three goals of the game. In the 18th minute, freshman Tucker Stenger (Enfield, N.H.) found a cutting Skarbelis who shot immediately on the reception of the pass to beat the Nighthawk sophomore goalkeeper, Casey Cisero (Shelton, Conn.), in upper half of the net.
Just over two minutes later, senior midfielder Sina Samali (North Andover, Mass.) found open space at about 30 yards out from the goal. His service was headed home by Skarbelis.
Shortly after the start of the second half, sophomore defender Xavier Lloyd (Somers, N.Y.) took a free kick from about 45 yards out. The free kick was headed on goal by Samali. The shot was saved but the rebound was not controlled and Skarbelis was in the right place to finish the hat-trick.
In the 70th minute, freshman defender James Wilson (Cote d'ivoire, Abidjan) crossed from the left corner to freshman forward Raymond Sclafani (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.). Scalfani finished the play with a shot in the upper half of the goal for his first collegiate marker.
Cisero made a season-high 12 saves for the Nighthawks who could only muster three shots on goal to the Pilgrims 16. For the contest, NEC shelled the Newbury goal with 31 shots while only needing to defend six Nighthawk shots. The loss marked the fourth shutout for Newbury in nine games.
Newbury looks to get back on track at Fitchburg State. Kickoff is scheduled for 4pm.
