Giraldo's Heroics Power Nighthawks to OT Win over Emmanuel

BOSTON, Mass. – The Newbury College men's soccer team collected its first win of the season this afternoon over visiting Emmanuel College in the Nighthawks home opener at Hellenic Field, 4-3.  The physical match ended less than two minutes into the first overtime period when freshman midfielder Ronald Giraldo (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) redirected a touch from sophomore forward Carlos Diego (Lawrence, Mass.).

Emmanuel opened the scoring in the 16th minute when freshman forward Justin Wentworth (China, Maine) tucked a well-placed shot just out of the reach of Nighthawk keeper junior Jarrod Smith (Watertown, Mass.).  Twelve minutes later, senior forward Kevin Teixiera (Boston, Mass.) scored on a through ball from Diego.  The equalizer was the first marker for the Nighthawks in the 2017 campaign.

Sophomore forward Alex Strafer (Auburn, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season less than a minute into the second half giving the Nighthawks their first lead of the season, 2-1.  Newbury extended it's advantage to 3-1 when reigning NECC Rookie of the Year, sophomore Nilton DeAndrade (Boston, Mass.) knifed through the Saints defenders to record his first goal of the season.  DeAndrade was assisted by Teixeira.

The Saints would battle back with a goal in the 51st minute when sophomore midfielder William Burdick (Scarborough, Maine) struck for his second goal of the year.  Senior midfielder Cameron Messier (Belchertown, Mass.) would stun Newbury with a strike in the 78th minute to tie the match 3-3.

This would set the stage for Giraldo's game winner in the extra session.  Late in the 91st minute, Strafer served a corner box to the far post where Diego settled the ball, flicked to Giraldo who would insure the first win of the season for Newbury.

The Nighthawks improved to 1-3 on the season while the Saints fell to 0-3-1.   Both teams will be busy on Wednesday when Emmanuel travels to Wentworth for a 7pm kickoff while Newbury returns to action by welcoming Eastern Nazarene College to Hellenic Field at 3:30pm.
