Nighthawks Drop 2011 Opener to Pioneers
WESTON, Mass. – The Newbury College men’s soccer team dropped the 2011 season opener to non-conference William Paterson University, 7-0, Saturday afternoon in the Regis College Invitational. The Pioneers improve to 1-0-1 on the season while the Nighthawks drop to 0-1.
But despite the loss, senior goalkeeper William McNally (Grafton, Mass.) played stoically in net for the Nighthawks and was not afraid of the Pioneer offense as the Grafton native registered 11 saves in the contest.
Naeem Boucher (Paterson, N.J.) got the scoring started for the Pioneers scoring on a penalty kick after he was taken down in the box. Six minutes later the junior forward picked up an assist on a goal by Anthony Ferrer (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) and just under three minutes after that, Marcus Hackett (Montclair, N.J.) got on the scoring sheet with a goal at the 14:46 mark of the first half.
Boucher added his second tally of the game a mere 1:45 into the second frame and give the Pioneers a 4-0 lead while Maddolin would then score three more goals in the rest of the period for the natural hat-trick.
Newbury was able to only muster three shots on the day with Shaundize Moosavizadeh (Winchester, Mass.), Marco Carvajal (Marblehead, Mass.) and Gerard Font-Raventos (Barcelona, Spain) each registering attempts. William McNally (Grafton, Mass.) suffered the setback for the Nighthawks while making 11 saves.
Senior Zach Collins (Bayville, N.J.) made one save in the first half to pick up the victory. Ben Horowitz (Spotswood, N.J.) played the second half and faced only one shot.
William Paterson advances to take on host Regis College for the Pride Cup on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. while Newbury will take on Suffolk University in the consolation game at 1:00 p.m.
