Men's Soccer Kicks-Off 2011 at Regis Invitational

After graduating just one senior last May, the core group is coming back in 2011 for the Newbury College men's soccer season in their second season under head coach Andrew Lafrenz. The Nighthawks are hungry for a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) title following two straight trips to the semifinals as they kick-off the fall at the two-day Regis Invitational on Saturday September 3rd and 4th.

2010 Review

The Nighthawks finished the 2010 season at 4-14-1 and 3-4 in the NECC to earn the sixth seed in the post-season. In the quarterfinals against Becker College, goalkeeper William McNally was stoic in net for the Nighthawks in 110 minutes plus seven shoot-out rounds. The Grafton native allowed just one goal to the Hawks while racking up seven saves to propel Newbury into the NECC semifinals for the second time in as many years with the 4-3 shoot-out victory.

Despite falling to the second seeded Eagles of Daniel Webster, McNally was named to the All-Conference second team leading the NECC with 163 saves including 50 saves against NECC opponents. Teammate, midfielder Shaundize Moosavizadeh garnered All-Conference First Team honors toping his 13 points in his freshmen season (2009) tallying 15 in 2010 with five goals and five assists.

2011 Outlook

Goalkeeper:

William McNally returns for his senior season at Newbury as the all-time leader in saves and will start the majority of the games in goal for the Nighthawks this season.  In 2010, he ranked eighth in the nation registering 9.06 saves per game. Junior Jeremy Bergeron returns as a backup and will see some time on defense as well.

Defense:

The Nighthawks are returning all four of last season's primary starters. Tim Chatigny returns for his fourth year with the Newbury while junior Alex Chappell was a mainstay on the defensive line appearing and starting in 17 of the Nighthawks 19 games in 2010. Chappell and Chatigny will be joined by freshman Joseph Jacob, who also looks to make a bolster the Nighthawk defense in 2011.

Midfielders:

Moosavizadeh returns for his junior year at Newbury and enters the 2011 three goals shy of second place in Newbury's career record books with 10 in his collegiate career. He will be joined along with midfield with sophomores Marc Jean-Jacques and Bryan Barrios, each of whom had solid freshman years and present a lot of scoring opportunities.  They will be joined by freshman Mamadou Diallo, who looks to make a big impact in his first season year at Newbury.

Forwards:

The Nighthawks are returning two starters at the forward position. Senior Andi Maska started all 19 games at forward and finished year with two goals while Nicholas Cataldo started 11 of the 18 games he appeared in. Midway through the 2010 season, Cataldo connected with Jean-Jacques for the game-winning goal against Elms.
