Moosavizadeh Headlines Awards Show
Junior midfielder Shaundize Moosavizadeh (Winchester, Mass.) became the first Newbury College men's soccer player to be tabbed as the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Player of the Year since John Mawson ('09) earned the honors following the 2008 season. Moosavizadeh was selected to the All-Conference First Team and Player of the Year by the nine NECC head coaches.
The Nighthawk offense ran through the Winchester, Mass. native in 2011. Tallying eight goals and eight assists in conference action, Moosavizadeh registered a goal or an assist against NECC foes in every game except one. Setting a career season-high with 13 goals, two assists and 28 points, he jumped into second place amongst Newbury all-time leaders with 23 goals and 10 assists for 56 points in his career. He trails only Mawson's 55 career goals and 126 career points.
Sophomore midfielder Marco Carvajal's (Marblehead, Mass.) hard-nose, gritty style of play was acknowledged by the other eight head coaches in the conference with an All-NECC Second Team nod. Carvajal registered his lone goal of the season against Wheelock College on October 27th.
For the third consecutive season, senior goalkeeper William McNally (Grafton, Mass.) was recognized by the conference, earning Honorable Mention honors. Appearing and starting in 13 games in net for the Nighthawks, the Central Massachusetts native registered a 1.26 goals against average against conference opponents with 48 saves. In addition, McNally is ranked fourth nationally averaging 9.38 saves per game.
Newbury Head Coach, Andrew Lafrenz was beat out in close head-to-head battle for the 2011 Coach of the Year by Southern Vermont's Tim Penrod.
