Nighthawks Open Game Strong Against Wildcats
CHESTNUT HILL, MA – Freshman Ibukunolowa Adeleke (Abuja, Nigeria/Air Force Comprehensive School) recorded two goals as the Newbury College men’s soccer team picked up the 4-1 victory against Wheelock, Thursday afternoon at Pine Manor College's Hedley Field.
The win moves the Nighthawks up to third in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) standings at 2-1 with Becker College, and 3-8 overall while the Wildcats fall to 0-3 in the NECC and 0-11 overall.
After being outshot 16-2 during the first half, Wheelock held even with Newbury in the final frame, 7-7, while being edged 4-1 in corner kicks. Sophomore Shaundize Moosavizadeh (Winchester, MA/Winchester) added to Adeleke’s two goals with a marker and an assist while junior keeper William McNally (Grafton, MA/Marian) worked the opening half for the win.
Moosavizadeh rang a shot off the post less than 90 seconds into the game, but the Wheelock defense otherwise held the visitors without a prime scoring chance until Adeleke tallied during the 14th and 15th minutes. His first marker, at 13:18, was deflected and nearly denied by a Wildcat field player after the net was vacated by Kashouh, while Adeleke's second marker came 46 ticks later. After grabbing a rebound of a teammate's shot, which hit the crossbar, the midfielder deked a defender and tallied from point-blank range.
Moosavizadeh threaded a through ball for junior Andi Maska (Roslindale, MA/English) in the 25th minute before freshman Bryan Barrios (Central Falls, RI/Central Falls) nearly made it 4-0 in the 40th minute, but his slow trickling shot past a charging Kashouh was cleared off the goal line by freshman back Matt Pennucci (Leominster, MA/Concord-Carlisle Regional).
With a little more than two minutes to go in the half, Wheelock junior Bobby Venning (Greenfield, NH/ConVal Regional) sent a cross from the left corner that freshman Ian Driscoll (Framingham, MA/Framingham) headed just wide at the right post. Moosavizadeh followed with a marker with 1:23 remaining, but Chang buried a penalty kick 26 seconds later.
During the second half, Chang twice nearly netted a second goal, being denied by a diving save from sophomore keeper Jeremy Bergeron (Fitchburg, MA/Montachuset Regional Vocational Technical) after a Venning breakout pass in the 51st minute and driving a hard shot into Bergeron's hands while trying to pick the upper left-hand corner in the 65th minute. Bergeron finished with four stops.
Freshman EJ Patch (Lisbon, NH/Lisbon Regional School) sent a 67th-minute corner kick toward the right post, where junior Matthew Howard (Brunswick, ME/Brunswick) readied himself for a shot at the doorstep before the Newbury defense denied an attempt. The Nighthawks missed a penalty kick at the 70:57 mark, and Venning was later stopped by a diving Bergeron in the 79th minute.
Newbury returns to action on October 17th when they host Mitchell College (5-5-1, 2-0-1 NECC) in a Sunday afternoon men’s and women’s soccer double-header at 12:00pm.
