Nighthawks Fall To Beacons, 4-1
BOSTON, MA – The Newbury College men’s soccer team dropped a non-conference match against UMass Boston, 4-1 at the Clark Athletic Center field in Boston, Thursday afternoon.
Sophomore forward Reyn Johnson (Mangilao, Guam) scored his fourth goal of the season and added two assists to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston men’s soccer team past Newbury College, 4-1, today at the Clark Athletic Center field located on the campus of UMass Boston. With the victory, the Beacons improve to 3-8 overall, while the Nighthawks fall to 1-7.
After nearly 30 minutes of steady offensive pressure which led to 15 shots, the Beacons finally beat Newbury junior goalkeeper William McNally (Grafton, MA) at 29:44 when sophomore defender Wesley Trevino (Boulder, CO) buried a through ball from Johnson. At 48:33, Johnson tallied his score after sophomore midfielder Luiz DaCunha (Revere, MA) hit him streaking alone from the top of the 18-yard box to put the Beacons ahead, 2-0.
It took the Nighthawks almost 22 minutes to get their first shot of the second half, but they made the best of their limited chances at 70:50 when senior midfielder Joseph Lawer (Worcester, MA) ricocheted a shot off of a UMass Boston defender and into the net to cut the lead to 2-1.
However, the Beacons struck for two goals late in the match to put the contest away. At 83:32, freshman midfielder Stefanos Galouzis (Watertown, MA) chested down a volley just in front of the 6-yard box and tapped it in. Sophomore midfielder Victor Costa (Malden, MA) followed five minutes later with a tally. Off a corner kick from sophomore forward Luis Saquich (Marlboro, MA), Johnson hit a bicycle kick towards the back left post that was collected and finished by Costa.
Beacons sophomore goalkeeper Brycen Dowd (Mansfield, MA) made four saves to earn back-to-back victories for the first time in his career. His counterpart, McNally, was solid in goal for Newbury College making 21 saves in a 40-shot barrage by UMass Boston.
Newbury returns to the pitch tomorrow October 9th when they host Becker College at 2:00pm.
