Nighthawks Outlasted By Mariners, 2-1
Serrano put Mitchell on the scoreboard early 18 minutes into the game, beating the defense on a give-and-go from teammate junior Tommy Derosier (Brooklyn, Conn./Killingly). The match remained a one-point game throughout the rest of the first half and five minutes into the second. Serrano added an insurance goal, which proved to be the game-winner, in the 50th minute of the contest. Junior Dustin Huguenin (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard) found Serrano in traffic to give the Mariners the 2-0 advantage.
Newbury freshman Ibukunoluwa Adeleke (Abuja, Nigeria/Air Force Comprehensive) broke up the shutout with a full field cross from the right from sophomore Shaundize Moosavizadeh (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) in the 58th minute of the contest. Junior goalkeeper William McNally (Grafton, Mass./Marian) had a solid day in goal for the Nighthawks recording 10 saves.
The Nighthawks fall to 2-2 in the conference with the loss and 3-9 overall while the Mariners improve to 3-0-1 in the NECC and 6-5-1 overall. Newbury returns to the pitch on Thursday October 21st when they travel to Dudley, Mass. for a non-conference match against Nichols College at 7:30 PM. Their next home contest will be Sunday October 24th against Daniel Webster College at 1:00 PM.
