Nighthawks Upset Lynx, 1-0
Junior Tim Chatigny (Pelham, Mass./Franklin County Technical) scored the game’s only goal with one minute remaining in overtime as the Newbury College men’s soccer team upset Lesley University, 1-0, on Senior Day. Before the game, the Nighthawks honored senior Joseph Lawer (Worcester, Mass./Burncoat) for his four years of dedication to the program.
From the beginning, it was evident the game was going to be a grind as the defense was solid on both sides. The Lynx and Nighthawks combined to take just nine shots in the first half as the first period came to end with the stalemate. Lesley kept the pressure on in the second, outshooting Newbury, 11-3 but the Nighthawk defense held their ground, keeping Lesley off the scoreboard.
Junior goalkeeper William McNally (Grafton, Mass./Marian) headlined the defense with a remarkable day in net. He helped hold the Lynx offense at bay in the second half, recording five of his seven saves to force overtime against the Lynx, who were previously undefeated against conference opponents.
The play in the extra period was much the same as it was in regulation until sophomore Shaundize Moosavizadeh (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) found Chatigny in front of the net for the game winner off a free kick on the nearside the field.
Newbury hands Lesley their first NECC loss with the victory and improve to 3-4 in the conference and 4-13 overall while the Lynx fall to 6-1 in the NECC and 15-2 overall.
