Lawer's Game Winner Helps Nighthawks Defeat Saints In Opener
The Newbury College men’s soccer team opened the season defeating Emmanuel College, 2-1 in overtime. Senior Joseph Lawer (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) found the back of the net for the game-winner three minutes into the overtime period for the victory.
Early in the match, Emmanuel sophomore Kevin Shirley (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) put the Saints on the scoreboard first, 10 minutes into the contest. Freshman Allan Parrelli (Reading, MA/Reading) found Shirley open up front to take the one goal advantage. But the Nighthawks stormed back.
Late in the first period, freshman Bahadir Aytug (Boston, MA/Perkiomer School) found the back left corner of the net, on a pass from sophomore Abdul Kamara (Milton, MA/Milton), to tie up the contest at one. It stayed that way until overtime when Kamara picked up his second assist of the day on Lawer’s game-winning goal.
Junior goalkeeper William McNally (Grafton, MA/Marian) was solid in goal for the Nighthawks as he recorded 14 saves in the victory.
With the win, the Nighthawks begin the season at 1-0 while the Saints fall to 0-2 on the season. Newbury returns to the pitch next Saturday September 11th when they travel to Cambridge, MA to face the MIT Engineers at 7:00pm.
