Lions Work Overtime to Defeat Nighthawks
BOSTON, Mass. – The Newbury College men’s soccer
team lost in double overtime against Emerson College, 2-1, in a
non-conference game at Rotch Field. Brendan Gouveia
(Seekonk, Mass.) made the first goal of his career a
memorable one as his blast from the right side of the box to the
upper left corner of the Nighthawks’ net in the
107th minute was the game-winner for the Lions.
Newbury had taken an early lead as sophomore Shaundize
Moosavizadeh (Winchester, Mass.) tallied his fifth goal of
the season. Moosavizadeh rifled a bullet from 25 yards to the
upper left corner of the Emerson net after dribbling around two
Lion defenders in the 13th minute.
Emerson turned up the offensive pressure for the remainder of the
half, outshooting Newbury 10-5. The Lions had numerous
scoring opportunities, but placed only one shot on net that was
saved by Newbury netminder sophomore Jeremy Bergeron
(Fitchburg, Mass.).
Bergeron was tested slightly more in the second half as the Lions'
aim improved somewhat, Emerson put four shots on net of the
15 the Lions took, the most important coming on a scramble in front
of the net that sophomore Jacob Lawrence (Clifton,
Va.) managed to sneak over the Nighthawk goal line in the
80th minute. It was Lawrence's team-leading 14th marker of
the year.
The first overtime period showcased only one shot on goal, that by
Newbury, which junior Noah Price (Apex,
N.C.) turned away. Emerson again turned up the
offensive intensity in the second overtime, taking four shots and
placing two on net including the game winner.
Newbury (3-13-0) returns to action on Saturday October
30th when they host Lesley University in the first game
of a men’s-women’s double-header at 12:00pm.
