Nighthawks Open NECC Action with Victory
Freshman Nicholas Cataldo (Walpole, MA/Sturgis Charter School) connected with fellow freshman Marc Daniel Jean-Jacques (Franklin Square, NY/Morning Star Christian) in the 89th minute to give the Newbury College men’s soccer team the 3-2 victory over Elms College. The Nighthawks begin conference action at 1-0 while the Blazers fall to 0-1.
Sophomore Shaundize Moosavizadeh (Winchester, MA/Winchester) began the day with a breakaway goal five minutes into the contest on a pass from freshman Bryan Barrios (Central Falls, RI/Central Falls) to give Newbury the early lead. But Elms continued to play a physical game and knotted up the score at one when senior Jon D’Amours (Chicopee, MA/Chicopee) put the ball in the back of the net off a corner kick from junior Sean Moylan (Chicopee, MA/Chicopee).
The Nighthawks would regain the lead and went into the half with the 2-1 advantage. Moosavizadeh scored his second goal of the contest when junior Tim Chatigny (Pelham, MA/Franklin County Technical) found him in front and made the cross pass for the second Newbury goal in the 19th minute. But the lead did not last long.
Moylan added to his assist in the first half with a goal less than 12 minutes into the second period. Blazer freshman Nzigamasa Jonathan (Springfield, MA/Science & Technology) tapped the ball to Moylan, 18 yards out, to tie up the contest at two. The game remained that way until Jean-Jacques’ game winning goal with under a minute left to play in the contest.
With the win, Newbury improves to 1-4 while Elms falls to 0-6-1 on the season. The Nighthawks return to the pitch next Saturday October 2nd when they host UMaine-Farmington at 12:00pm.
