Seahawks Overpower Nighthawks
The Seahawks of Salve Regina University proved to be too much for the Newbury College Nighthawks this afternoon in men's soccer action. Visitors Christopher Knoth (East Slip, NY/East Slip) and Ian Jengtgen (Columbus, OH/St. Charles Prep) each chipped in one goal and one assist a piece en route to the 5-0 victory over the host Nighthawks.
The structured Seahawk offense came out strong to start the game, peppering Nighthawk keeper William McNally (Grafton, MA/Marian) with six shots within the first 20 minutes of play until Tony Lania (Concord, MA/Concord-Carlisle) found the back of the net at 22:23, assisted by Jengtgen. The Newbury defense settled in, staving off the Salve Regina strikers for the majority of the first half but Seahawk Patrick Vierengal (Armonk, NY/Byram Hills) gave his team a two goal advantage as he scored off a Matt Khouri (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) feed at 43:40.
Salve Regina wasted little time after the break as Knoth ripped the ball past McNally at 48:40, pushing the score to 3-0. The striker would add an assist twenty minutes later, giving Jengtgen his lone goal of the match. Despite taking 23 shots in the second half, the Seahawks would score just three goals - closing out the scoring at 84:37 as James Tollesfson (Middletown, RI/Middletown) found Jacob Brigandi (Vernon, CT/Rockville) for the finale.
Newbury's McNally registered 18 saves on the day, playing well in his 2009 debut for the Nighthawks. With the loss, Newbury falls to 0-3 and looks to break into the win column on Thursday, September 17th when they host Nichols College for a game beginning at 3:30 PM.
