Nighthawks Fall to Raiders

The Newbury College men's soccer team is still in search of win number one on the 2009 season as they suffered a tough 3-0 loss to visiting Rivier College today in Chestnut Hill, MA.  The Raiders scored one goal in the first and two in the second half to seal the victory.

The two squads were evenly matched coming into today's game as Newbury and Rivier stood with records of 0-4 and 0-5, respectively.  During the first 45 minutes of play, the teams battled aggressively for possession nearly ending in a stalemate, until Raider Gustavo Marques (Lowell, MA/Lowell) found the back of the net with 16 seconds left in the half.

Rivier wasted little time adding to their lead as Chris Nugent (Camberley, Surry, England/Frogmore) blasted a shot past Newbury goalkeeper Steven Gratta (Hull, MA/Hull) off a penalty kick at 58:35.  Gratta registered five saves on the day as aiding the solid effort of Andy Osei (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) had several key runs, but was unable to capitalize on the attempts.

Newbury travels to Southern Vermont College on Saturday, September 26th for their first New England Collegiate Conference match-up of the season.  Game begins at 3:00 PM.
