Newbury Outlasts Elms, 1-0
CHICOPEE, MA - Elms College senior goalkeeper Nick Pellegrini (Ludlow, MA) collected three saves, but Newbury College's Hector Abudoj (Tegucigalpa) netted what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 85th minute to help lift the Nighthawks to a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Blazers in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's soccer game during Homecoming weekend.
With the loss, Elms moves to 3-11 on the season, 1-4 in the conference, while Newbury, winners in four of their last six contests, improve to 4-10 overall, 4-1 in league play.
After 84 minutes of back-and-forth action, Newbury finally broke the stalemate when Andy Osei (Worcester, MA) found Abudoj with a pass that he placed into the net to give the Nighthawks a 1-0 lead.
Elms was not able to score the equalizer in the final four minutes of play, allowing Newbury to hang on for the hard-fought victory.
The Nighthawks outshot the Blazers 22-14 in the win, while Newbury goalkeeper William McNally (Grafton, MA) picked up four saves.
Elms sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Sullivan (Agawam, MA) entered in the second period and notched three saves, while sophomore forward Nick Espinola (Derry, NH) led the Blazers' attck with five shots in the losing effort.
Elms returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 21 with a road contest against Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). That game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
