BROOKLINE, Mass. – Sophomore A.J. Skinner (Quincy, Mass.) turned in a scorecard of 78 at the Newbury Kickoff Classic to lead the Newbury College men's golf team as they opened the 2015 campaign, Thursday afternoon. Castleton State University won the event with a team-score of 301.
Spartan junior Zach Temple (Hartland, Vt.) earned medalist honors for the second time this season, firing a two-under, 69. The Vermont native led the 27-player field with a total of 14 pars to go along with three birdies on the par 71, 6,305-yard course.
Temple finished one stroke ahead of Babson College first year Riley Whitham (Harvard, Mass.), who also finished the day under-par, posting a 70. With a solid 13 pars on the afternoon, Whitham led the field in par four scoring at one-under as he led the Beavers to a 303 team finish.
Endicott College finished third with a team-score of 304 with three players turning in scores in the 70s. Sophomore Drew Benshoff (Concord, Mass.) led the way firing a 74 to finish fourth while seniors Austin Teal (Loudonville, N.Y.) and Alex Viola (Brunswick, Maine) tied for fifth, carding 75.
One of nine players to post double digit pars, Skinner led the Nighthawks recording 10 pars on the afternoon. Additionally the South Shore native was solid on the par threes and par fives, finishing even while posting one-birdie.
Elms sophomore Mike Fleury (West Springfield, Mass.) led the Blazers with a team-low score of an 82 while senior Brian Benson (Agawam, Mass.) was right behind him turning in a scorecard of an 83.
The Nighthawks return to the links next Wednesday September 9th when they travel to New London, Conn. for the Mitchell Invitational at 12:00 p.m.
