CHICOPEE, Mass. - Elms freshman Michal Ohraka (Feeding Hills, Mass.) exploded for a career-high 29 points to lead the Blazer men's basketball team to an 80-73 New England Collegiate Conference win over Newbury on Saturday afternoon from the Maguire Center.
Ohradka shot 8-of-11 from the field including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and converted 10-of-11 from the line. Freshman Greg Metelus (Palm Beach, Fla.) finished with 21 points on 7-of-17 shooting. Ohradka added three assists, three steals, and two rebounds in the game while Metelus finished with six boards, four assists, and two blocks. Freshman Andre Peguero (Boynton Beach, Fla.) added 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Five Nighthawks players scored in double figures, led by 17 points from senior Jeduan Langston (Roxbury, Mass.). Freshman Miguel Rivera (Waterbury, Conn.) and senior Daivon Edwards (Roxbury, Mass.) each finished with 15 points. Senior Ato Botsio (Canton, Mass.) added 12 and freshman Wayne Massey (Gwynn Oak, Md.) had 10.
Elms led 41-36 at halftime but Newbury charged back at the beginning of the second half to take a 50-47 lead with 16:18 to play. The Blazers responded with an 8-0 run to regain the lead only to see the Nighthawks tie the game at 61-61 with a run of their own with 7:53 remaining.
The sides stayed within one possession before an Ohraka layup with 1:13 remaining gave the Blazers a 75-71 lead.
Metelus and Ohraka combined to shoot 5-of-6 from the line in the final minute, holding off the Nighthawks for the 80-73 win.
The win moves the Blazers to 2-18 (2-8 NECC) while the loss drops the Nighthawks to 4-15 (2-8 NECC).
The Nighthawks continue their season with a Wednesday evening game as they host the Lesley Lynx at 7:00 p.m.
