BROOKLINE, Mass. - Bulldogs junior Dayvon Russell (Naugatuck, Conn.) came up clutch from deep, leading the Bulldogs with 15 points, including 4-for-8 shooting from beyond the arc as the Dean Bulldogs overcame a 10-point deficit to defeat the Newbury Nighthawks, 80-77 on Tuesday evening at Pappas Gymnasium in New England Collegiate Conference play.
Four other Bulldogs finished in double-digit scoring including Armani Baker (Pawtucket, R.I.), who finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Jordan Booker (Waterbury, Conn.) added 13 points and eight rebounds.
Nighthawks senior Jeduan Langston (Roxbury, Mass.) led all scorers with 22 points while grabbing 15 rebounds. Senior Daivon Edwards (Roxbury, Mass.) scored 14 points, including 3-of-8 from deep. Freshman Miguel Rivera (Waterbury, Conn.) added 12 points in 38 minutes.
The Nighthawks went into halftime with a 44-36 lead but the momentum completely changed coming out of the locker room as the Bulldogs opened the half on a 16-2 run in the opening 5:18, erasing the halftime deficit and turning it into a 52-46 lead. In that first 5:18, the Bulldogs shot 6-for-8 including six points by both Russell and Baker.
The Nighthawks 16-10 response that followed would tie the teams at 62-62 with 9:26 remaining.
The remaining time was all played within one possession and the Nighthawks had the lead 77-76, with an Edwards three and 1:16 to go.
Bulldogs sophomore Josh Croskey (Union, N.J.) was fouled on the next two Dean possessions and made 3-of-4 from the line to give the Bulldogs a 79-77 lead with 12 seconds remaining.
Dean's defense held strong, causing a turnover in the final seconds, thanks to a steal by Russell. After a missed free throw, the Nighthawks three-quarter court heave at the buzzer fell short, giving Dean the 80-77 comeback win.
The win lifts the Bulldogs to 11-8 (5-4 NECC) while the loss drops the Nighthawks to 4-14, 2-7 NECC).
