Nighthawk Trio Ignite Victory over Mountaineers

The Newbury College Men's Basketball team won their second of three games in tonight's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) matchup, with an 83-68 victory over the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont College. Junior guard Tim Young (Brockton, Mass.) lead three in double figures with a team high 21points.

Southern Vermont jumped out to the 5-0 lead, forcing Newbury head coach Jelani Townsell to call his first timeout. Coming out of the timeout sophomore guard Steve Rosemond ( Everett, Mass.) answered by putting the Nighthawks on the board with a layup, from Jason Marshall (Fairburn, Ga.). However, the Mountaineers were not going to go away easily, junior guard Taeshon Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) answered with a layup of his own to push the lead back to five.

Finding themselves down by four midway through the first half the Nighthawks didn't panic. Marshall was the spark to a 12-0 run that lasted nearly four minutes. The Georgia native snatched an offensive  rebound off a missed three point attempt by Rosemond, and laid it back in for the put-back.

Southern Vermont freshman Cory Christensen (Sharon, Conn.) put an end to the run, netting a layup with 8:50 remaining in the half. But the damage had already been done by Newbury as they entered the locker room, with 32-28 lead.

Returning for the second half, Johnson opened up game up with a layup cutting the Nighthawk lead down to two. It was the closest the Mountaineers came in the half. Along with Young and Rosemond, sophomore guard Kwame Thompson (Brockton, Mass.) took over, recording 13 of his 17 points in the second half.

Red hot from behind the arc was Southern Vermont's Hunter Stratton (Bennington, Vt.), who registered five treys with three of them coming in the second half for 13 of his 21 points. Teammates Taeshon Johnson and freshman Brandon Johnson (Chatham, N.Y.) followed up with 11 points of their own in the half.

Adding to the Nighthawk victory was junior guard Kenneth Melendez (Harlem, N.Y.), who came off the bench late in the game and dropped six points in five minutes. The New Yorker registered his first points of the season knocking down a wide open trey with three minutes remaining but he was not done yet. Moments later, freshman Milciades Carrasco (Haverhill, Mass.) found Melendez, again, for his second three pointer of the game and sealed the victory over the Mountaineers.

With the win tonight, Newbury improves to 6-11, and 3-6 in the conference, while Southern Vermont falls to 2-16 and 2-8 in the NECC. The Nighthawks look to take another victory over the Mountaineers on Saturday January 28, 2012 where they will be traveling up to Vermont in hopes to take the season sweep and move up in conference standings.
