Nighthawks Overpowered By Hawks
The Newbury College men's basketball team fell to Becker College, 70-45, in the second game of Thursday evening's twin bill. Becker senior guard Terrance Favors (Boston, Mass.) kept the NCAA's longest conference winning streak alive leading four Hawks in double figures, tallying a game-high 19 points.
Newbury came out of the gate strong and took advantage of a slow start by Becker. Senior forward Jason Marshall (Fairburn, Ga.) put the Nighthawks on the board first knocking down two free throws but the Hawks were hovering overhead.
It was a barnburner for the first 10 minutes of the contest. The Nighthawks were able to quell a potent Hawks offense as freshman center Cameron Owen (Concord, N.H.) sparked a mini 5-0 run. After Becker first year center Jerome Cohen (Boston, Mass.) gave the Hawks the lead with lay-up at 18:16, junior guard Tim Young (Brockton, Mass.) found Owen wide open at the top of the key for his first of four treys in the contest. But the Hawks powerful offense was not going to stay dormant for long.
The game began to turn towards the undefeated Hawks when Marshall picked up his second foul mid-way through the half on a good lay-up by freshman forward Yahmad Rountree (Waterbury, Conn.). Roundtree converted the three point play, re-gaining the lead for Becker and they would not give it up as they went into the half with a 34-24 lead.
Down by 10 when the teams emerged from the locker room, the Nighthawks were not going to back down. Owen continued his hot shooting hand from long distance, registering another two treys while sophomore Steve Rosemond (Everett, Mass.) also chipped in another six points. But the contest quickly became a shoot-out and Becker has plenty of offensive ammunition to last 40 minutes.
Roundtree followed up Favors tallying 17 points in addition to ripping down a game-high 10 boards for a double-double while Cohen added six points, to his first half nine, to finish with 15 on the night. Sophomore forward Chris Canady (Newark, N.J.) rounded out the Hawks in double figures notching 11.
Despite the loss, Rosemond led three Nighthawks in double figures tallying 14 on the evening while Owen was three rebounds shy of his first collegiate career double-double, netting a career single game-high 12 points. Young was the last of the threesome in double digits with 11.
Newbury falls to 4-10 and 1-5 in the conference while Becker remains undefeated in the NECC improving to 5-0 and 10-4 overall. The Nighthawks will look to return to their winning ways when they host conference foe Mitchell College Saturday January 21st at 2:00 p.m.
Game Notes:
With Tim Young's 11 points tonight, he currently is nine points away from the elusive 1,000th career point milestone with 991 in his three year career at Newbury.
