Nighthawks Clawed By 'Cats
The Newbury College men's basketball team fell to Wheelock College, 54-52, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action, Saturday afternoon. Wildcat senior Max Kaim (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) put on an offensive show, setting a new career single-game high, netting 29 points on the Nighthawks en route to the victory.
Senior forward Jason Marshall (Fairburn, Ga.) put the Nighthawks on the scoreboard early with an easy put-back a minute into the game but the Wildcats answered. Kaim gave the crowd a preview of what was to come in Saturday's matinee and launched his first trey of the game to give Wheelock the one point lead.
After senior center Eric Rice (Woburn, Mass.) knocked down a jumper to put the Wildcats up three, Nighthawks freshman center Cameron Owen (Concord, N.H.) showed that Rice was not the only center who could score. Junior guard Tim Young (Brockton, Mass.) found Owen wide open at the top of the key for a long distance trey that sparked a 12-4 Newbury run, which lasted over 10 minutes.
Kaim broke up the Nighthawks run with a lay-up at 6:48 and was lethal for the last six minutes of the first half. Registering 13 of his first half-high 16 points, the Florida senior helped the Wildcats take a one-point, 24-23, lead into halftime.
When the teams emerged from the locker rooms at the start of the second, the Wildcats kept the pressure on the Nighthawks as they built up a 10 point lead midway through the second half. However, Newbury remained resilient and clawed their way back.
Following Kaim's jumper that gave the Wildcats a five-point lead at 7:32, the momentum in the air appeared to have shifted directions as the Nighthawks went on a 5-0 run to take their first lead since the two minute mark of the first half.
However, there was still plenty of time left on the clock. Rice gave the Wildcats the lead back with the lay-up while Kaim made it a three point game with a lay-up of his own. Senior forward Kyle Pierce (Burlington, Mass.) sealed the game knocking down his only points of the half with 1:14 remaining to give the Wildcats a four-point cushion.
Wheelock improves to 2-1 in conference action with the win and 4-7 overall while Newbury falls to 4-7 and 1-2 in the NECC. The Nighthawks will look to right the ship when they travel down the road to Cambridge, Mass. on Tuesday January 10th to tip-off against Lesley University at 8:00 p.m. In their first meeting of the year at home on December 6th, the Nighthawks held off the Lynx, 67-58.
Game Notes:
Senior forward Jason Marshall was one rebound shy of his second double-double of the season – and first of 2012 – rounding out a trio of Nighthawks in double figures with 11 on the day…
