Nighthawks Can't Tame Cats

In their first game back from the winter break, the Newbury College men's basketball team fell short against Wentworth Institute of Technology, 64-55, in the second game of Thursday evening's double-header. Sophomore guard Derek Mayo (Casco, Maine) led three Leopards in double figures registering a game-high 22 points.

The three week long lay-off appeared as if it had no ill side effects on the Nighthawks as they jumped out to the quick 5-0 lead but the Leopards had an answer. First year Bo Leary (Auburn, Maine) put Wentworth on the board and sparked a 13-3 run. However, the Nighthawks were not going to be denied.

After senior forward Jason Marshall (Fairburn, Ga.) closed the gap to within a field goal midway through the contest, freshman guard Dallas Serrano (Valley Stream, N.Y.)  found sophomore Eric Watson (New Rochelle, N.Y.) for a long distance jumper to give the Nighthawks the lead back. Although the Leopards came back to knot up the contest twice, Newbury never relinquished the lead in the first half as they took a four-point, 31-27, lead into the locker room.

Marshall extended the Nighthawk lead to six, 32 seconds into the second but was soon cut in half by a trey from senior guard Eric Prue (Auburn, Maine). Three minutes later the Maine native found an open Davon Daniels (Paterson, N.J.) for a mid-range jumper to give the Leopards the one-point, 34-33 advantage and never turned around to look back.

Knocking down seven of 14 from the field, Watson led the young Nighthawk squad with a team-high 17 points while junior guard Tim Young (Brockton, Mass.) followed up with 16 but it was not enough to tame the Leopards. Junior captain Corey Therriault (Auburn, Maine) followed up Mayo netting 15 points while Prue rounded of trio in double figures with 11.

The loss drops Newbury to 4-6 on the season while Wentworth improves to 5-3. The Nighthawks return to the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action this weekend, Saturday January 7th, when they host Wheelock College at 2:00 p.m. The Leopards will also be in action on Saturday returning to Commonwealth Coast action hosting Nichols College at 3:00 p.m.

Game Notes:

Freshman guard Dallas Serrano (Valley Stream, N.Y.) had a break-out game where he tied or set career single-game highs for himself in points (6), assists (3), field goals (3) and field goal attempts (7).
