Men's and Women's Basketball to Host NECC Quarterfinals
Come out and support the Newbury College men's and women's basketball teams as they host the first round the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) post-season tournament Tuesday evening. It is the first time either program has hosted a post-season round since the NECC was started three years ago.
The women, who made the tournament as the fourth seed with a 9-7 NECC record and 11-14 overall will host the fifth seeded Becker College (10-14, 8-8 NECC) in the early game at 6:00pm. Tonight will be the third time the Nighthawks and Hawks tip-off this season with Newbury up 2-0.
When Newbury last faced Becker they were in the midst of a five game win-streak. Junior guard Morganna Machado was red-hot on offense, setting a new career game-high, draining 26 points – 15 from beyond the arc – en route to the 71-63 victory on December 11, 2010. In their second meeting, Newbury staved off two 20-plus point nights from two Becker freshmen for the 76-58 win. Sophomore center Catherine O'Connell was a force in the post registering 24 rebounds in addition to her team-high 17 points.
The men, who also made the tournament as the fourth seed with an 8-6 NECC record and 10-14 overall, will host nearby Wheelock College (10-15, 6-8 NECC) in the second game of the post-season double-header at 8:00pm. Tonight will be the third time the Nighthawks and Wildcats tip-off this season with Newbury up 2-0.
