Nighthawks Defeat Lesley, Earn Season Sweep
The Newbury College men’s basketball team defeated Lesley
University, 75-60, Thursday evening in NECC action. Three
Nighthawks tallied double-figures in scoring led by sophomore guard
Tim Young (Brockton, MA/Brockton) with 19 points. Sophomore
forward Peterson Bernard (Boston, MA/Madison Park) registered a
double-double with 15 points scored and 12 rebounds. Freshman
guard Eric Watson (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) netted 14 points
in the winning effort.
The Lynx and Nighthawks battled back-and-forth in the first half
with both teams exchanging multiple leads. Lesley junior
point guard John Sanchez (Carson, CA/Saint John Bosco), who was the
game’s leading scorer with 25 points, helped the Lynx gain
the lead, 35-33, with two free-throws with one minute
remaining. Young answered with a three pointer on the next
possession giving Newbury a one-point advantage. Off the
in-bound, Sanchez marched coast-to-coast laying up two at the
buzzer to give the Lynx a one point lead at the half,
37-36.
The score at the half was the last time Lesley held the lead in the
game. The Nighthawks dominated the second half by outscoring
the Lynx 39 to 23 and playing solid defense including two blocked
shots and four steals. Senior center Jesus Trejo (Methuen,
MA/Methuen) contributed in the Lynx losing effort adding 13 points
and nine rebounds.
Newbury College’s overall record improves to 4-11 and 3-3 in
the NECC. Lesley University falls to 3-11 overall and 0-4 in
conference play. The Nighthawks return to action
Saturday, Jan. 20th when they travel to New London, CT to tip-off
against NECC opponent Mitchell College. The Lynx also
return to the hard-court on Saturday against Becker College.
