Nighthawks Down Eagles, 72-65

Nashua – Sophomore forward Peterson Bernard (Boston, Mass.) led six players in double figures, netting a team-high 16 points en route to Newbury’s 72-65 victory over Daniel Webster College in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action, Thursday evening.

Bernard was just two rebounds shy of a double-double recording eight on the night while Tim Young (Brockton, Mass.) notched 13 points, Rondell Best (Brockton, Mass.) scored 12 and John Rowley, Jr. (Hartford, Conn.) had a double-double of 10 points and 10 caroms as the Nighthawks (7-12, 6-4 NECC) won for the fourth time in their last five outings.

Eric Watson (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and Chris Torres (Brockton, Mass.) also chipped in with 10 points apiece for Newbury.

Keith Speed (Columbus, Ohio) added 19 for the Eagles (9-9, 3-5 NECC), while Chris Voukides (Salem, N.H.) and Chris Hanson (Salem, Mass.) chipped in with eight points each.

DWC shot 43-percent in the first half and held a 34-31 lead at the half, but managed to hit just 28-percent from the field in the second, while Newbury went to work inside, finishing with an important 52-43 advantage in total rebounds including 16 on the offensive glass and added 40 points in the paint to 28 for the hosts.

DWC held as much as a five-point lead early in the second half and held a 42-38 advantage with 15:24 to go but the Nighthawks answered with an 11-0 run keyed by two Bernard layups and a Torres trey for a 49-42 lead with 11:18 remaining.

DWC would pull back in it with an 11-4 run of their own including two from downtown from Hanson and a Voukides layup tied it at 53 with 7:25 left.

But Bernard followed with two inside moves sparking another Nighthawk run, this one a 13-2 stretch ending with a Watson layup for a 64-55 lead with 2:02 to go to ice it.

The Eagles get back into action on Saturday when they visit Mitchell College in a NECC matchup tipping off at 3:00 p.m. Newbury visits Elms Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. NECC tip.
