Townsell Named Head Men’s Basketball Coach
Jelani Townsell begins his first season as Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Newbury College. Townsell comes to Newbury College from the University of Connecticut where he helped lead the Huskies to the 2011 NCAA National Championship under the supervision of Hall of Fame Coach Jim Calhoun.

Bernard Earns NECC All Conference Second Team
Sophomore forward Peterson Bernard (Boston, Mass./Madison Park) was named to the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) All Conference second team. Bernard helped the Newbury College men’s basketball to an 8-6 conference record (11-15 overall) and their first NECC semifinals appearance, averaging a double-double on the season (15.6 ppg, 10.0 rpg).

Strong Second Half Pushes Newbury to Semifinals
The fourth seeded Newbury College men’s basketball team defeated the visiting fifth seeded Wildcats of Wheelock College Tuesday night, 68-61, in the quarterfinals of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) championship. Nighthawks’ senior guard John Rowley (Hartford, Conn./Rockville) lead all scorers with 18 points and Wildcats’ junior guard Kyle Pierce (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) adding 17 points in defeat.

Men's and Women's Basketball to Host NECC Quarterfinals
Come out and support the Newbury College men’s and women’s basketball teams as they host the first round the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) post-season tournament Tuesday evening. The women will host fifth seeded Becker College in the early game at 6:00pm while the men tip-off against fifth seeded Wheelock College in the second game at 8:00pm.

Nighthawks Drop Regular Season Finale to Mountaineers
The Newbury College men’s basketball team dropped their season finale to Southern Vermont College, 82-71, Saturday afternoon but earn a post-season berth. Mountaineer senior guard Lance Spratling paved the way to victory registering a game-high 29 points. Sophomore forward Peterson Bernard registered a double-double for the Nighthawks, tallying 23 points and 11 rebounds.

Nighthawks Complete Historic Week
Morganna Machado’s buzzer-beater to upset Mitchell College and Michael Biuso’s 1,000th defensive dig, capped off a remarkable week for the Nighthawks. All three of Newbury College’s winter sports teams combined for an undefeated 9-0 week.

The Newbury College men’s basketball team defeated the visiting Eastern Nazarene Lions, 83-70, Thursday evening. Peterson Bernard (Boston, Mass./Madison Park) led the Nighthawks to victory with 22 points scored and 13 boards, both game highs.

Sophomore center Peterson Bernard (Boston, Mass./Madison Park) earned New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Player of the Week honors for the past week. In wins against Lesley University and Mitchell College, the second year player averaged a double-double with 21.5 points per game and 10.5 rebounds per game.

The fourth place Newbury College men’s basketball team was defeated by fifth place Daniel Webster College, 68-67, Tuesday evening in NECC action. Four Nighthawks tallied double-figures in scoring led by conference player of the week, sophomore forward Peterson Bernard (Boston, MA/Madison Park), who netted 18 points. Eagles’ freshman forward Daris Crosby (Columbia, S.C./Richland Northeast) netted 18 points and sophomore forward John Hickson (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) added 17 in the victory.

The Newbury College Men’s basketball team was defeated 79-35 by Becker College. Rajai Leggett (New Haven, CT) led the Hawks with 17 points and 12 rebounds bringing their season record to 8-1 and 1-0 in NECC conference play. Newbury College falls to 1-8 and 0-1 in the NECC.

The Newbury College men’s basketball team fell to Regis College, 60-48, in a non-conference game Tuesday evening. Regis’ Derrick Neal (Boston, Mass./Brighton) led the Pride to victory becoming the first player in Regis College men’s basketball history to record 1,000 points in his career.

Nighthawks Defense Holds Engineers to Season Low
The Newbury College men’s basketball team held a high-powered MIT line-up to their fewest point total of the season as the 20th ranked Engineers earned their fifth win with the 61-53 comeback victory. Coming into the contest, MIT averaged 78 points per game and shut out opponents in their previous four victories by an average of 27 points.

Sophomore Peterson Bernard (Boston, Mass./Madison) was named to the All-Tournament Team at the 2010 Brandeis Classic, Saturday afternoon. Bernard registered a double-double, tallying 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Mules of Colby College defeated the Nighthawks, 88-74, in the consolation game.

The Newbury College men’s basketball team dropped their second game of the season to Brandeis University at the Brandeis Classic Friday evening in Waltham, Mass., 89-60. Sophomore forward Peterson Bernard had a big night, shooting 7-for-10 from the floor for 15 points and recording six rebounds while classmate Timothy Young led the Nighthawks with 20 points.

The Newbury College men’s basketball team opened the 2010-2011 season with a tough loss to Anna Maria College Tuesday evening, 80-74. Sophomore Timothy Young (Brockton, Mass.) shot 71% from beyond the arc, draining a game-high 33 points on the AMCATS in the loss.
