Leopards Prey on Nighthawks
The Newbury College men's basketball team lost to Wentworth Institute of Technology, 90-67, Thursday evening. Senior Matt Abbott (Falmouth, MA/Falmouth) led the way for the victors recording a double-double, tallying a game-high 22 points and 12 rebounds.
After a slow start, the Leopards jumped out to a quick 11-4 advantage sparked by Abbott who drained seven of 10 field goals in the first for 14 points. Behind Abbott and teammate freshman Corey Therriault (Lewiston, ME/Edward Little), Wentworth took a commanding 22-point lead in the locker room at the half.
But the Nighthawks started to chip away at the deficit to begin the second half of play. Five minutes into the period, freshman Rondell Best (Taunton, MA/Brockton) rejected a Wentworth lay-up which led to a long two-point field goal by fellow freshman Timothy Young (Brockton, MA/Brockton) to inch Newbury closer. Freshman Oasiris Yates (White Plains, NY/Valhalla) led the way netting 14 of his team-high 20 points.
While Abbott paved the way to Wenworth's fourth victory of the season, the play of junior Sam Herrick (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) should not go unnoticed as he was two points shy of double-double and three assists away from a triple-double. Herrick was solid on offense and defense, ripping down 10 boards while netting eight points as well dishing out seven assists. Therriault and senior Shane West (Saco, ME/Milford) finished the game with 13 points.
With the loss, the Nighthawks fall to 2-6 on the season while the Leopards improve to 4-6. Newbury will kick off conference action as they travel to Chicopee, MA to face Elms College Saturday January 9th at 4:00pm. After their next three games on the road, the Nighthawks will return home on Saturday January 16th against Lesley University.
