Nighthawks Soar Past Pride
The Newbury College men's basketball team earned their second win of the season in an 80-56 victory over Regis College Tuesday evening. With the win the Nighthawks improve to 2-5 on the season while the Pride falls to 2-4.
Freshman forward Rondell Best (Taunton, MA/Brockton) was solid for the Nighthawks offensively and defensively. In the first half, Best rejected a Pride lay-up, sparking an 8-2 Newbury run. Behind Best's first half seven points, the Nighthawks took a three-point, 30-27, lead into the locker room.
Regis junior Thorton Paul (Boston, MA/West Roxbury) scored the first points of the second half from long range to knot up the score at 30. But Newbury answered with a trey from freshman Oasiris Yates (White Plains, NY/Valhalla) to put the Nighthawks back on top and they did not look back. Newbury went on to outscore Regis, 50-29, in the second behind Yates who scored all 17 of his game-high points in the half.
Best recorded a double-double, tallying 13 points and 12 boards, as well as picking up two blocks and a steal in the victory. Junior guard John Rowley, Jr. (Hartford, CT/Rockville) and freshman guard Timothy Young (Brockton, MA/Brockton) rounded out the four Nighthawks in double figures with 13 and 19 points, respectively.
Junior Phil Alibrandi (York, ME/York) led the Pride with 14 points while Paul hit two treys tallying 10 points for the Pride in the loss.
The Nighthawks will return to the hard-court on Thursday January 7th when they host the Leopards of Wentworth Institute of Technology at 7:00pm.
