Engineers Triumph Over Nighthawks
The Newbury College men's basketball team lost to a tough Massachusetts of Technology team, Thursday evening, 76-50. Sophomore Noel Hollingsworth (Salt Lake City, UT/Judge Memorial Catholic) led the way for the Engineers recording a double-double, tallying 30 points and 11 rebounds in MIT's seventh victory of the season.
In the first half, Newbury played solid defense forcing seven MIT turnovers including two of the team's three steals by freshman Timothy Young (Brockton, MA/Brockon). The Nighthawks went to the locker room at the half, trailing the Engineers by just seven, 33-26, behind Young's team-leading nine points and junior John Rowley's (Hartford, CT/Rockville) eight points.
MIT returned to the floor in the second period and took advantage of 11 turnovers by Newbury, outscoring the Nighthawks, 43-24 in the second half. Hollingsworth played a solid game for the Engineers, hitting 20 of his 30 points in the second and was nearly perfect from the charity stripe, netting eight of his nine attempts, on the night. Teammates freshman Will Tashman (Atherton, CA/Menlo School) and freshman Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, NJ/Phillips Exeter) also reached double figures, tallying 13 points each. Tashman was one board shy of a double-double himself, with nine.
Despite the loss, Young led the way for the Nighthawks with a team-high 18 points to add to his two steals in the first half. Freshman Chris Torres (Brockton, MA/Brockton) had a productive second half, recording five of his seven points and hitting both of his free throws.
With the loss, Newbury falls to 1-4 on the season while MIT improves to 7-0. The Nighthawks return to the hard-court this Saturday when they face Curry College at noon.
