Nighthawks End Season With Loss To Elms
The Newbury College men's basketball team lost their final game of the season, 97-75, to Elms College in the first game of the men's-women's double-header, Saturday afternoon. Senior Juan Maldonado (Hoyoke, MA/Holyoke) headlined three Blazers in double figures with a team-high 19 points.
Before the game, the Nighthawks honored seniors Phillip Batista (Marlborough, MA/Marlboro), Paul Beckford Jr. (Somerville, MA/Somerville), Michael Foley (Oxford, ME/Oxford Hills Comprehensive), Samuel Stanford (Somerville, MA/Somerville) for their four years of service to the program.
Freshman Timothy Young (Brockton, MA/Brockton) kept the Nighthawks in the game, dropping 15 of his game-high 22 points in the first half. But Maldonado and junior Edgar Martinez (Springfield, MA/Central) continued to keep their foot on the pedal combining for 21 points as the Blazers took a 48-38 lead into the locker room.
In the second, Elms remained hot as Martinez followed up Maldonado's 19 points with 18 points of his own while teammate senior Javon Mathis (East Hartford, CT/Plainville) rounded out the Blazers in double digits with 16. Newbury freshman Chris Torres (Brockton, MA/Brockton) added 18 points in the loss while classmate Rondell Best (Brockton, MA/Brockton) was a point shy of a double-double, tallying nine points and 17 rebounds.
Newbury finishes the season with a 4-10 conference record, 6-19 overall while Elms improves to 19-6 and 12-2 in the NECC and will enter the post-season as the conference's second seed.
