Nighthawks Fly High Over Eagles
Freshman guard Timothy Young (Brockton, MA/Brockton) drained a long field goal with three seconds left in regulation to give Newbury College the 61-59 victory over Daniel Webster College, Thursday evening.
The Nighthawks opened the game with a 10-0 run against the Eagles, sparked by freshman Chris Torres (Brockton, MA/Brockton), who netted 10 of his 15 points in the first half. But the Eagles were not going to be denied. Junior Chris Hanson (Salem, MA/Salem) brought Daniel Webster back to take the four-point, 29-25 lead at the half with 15 points - nine from long distance.
Young incited the second half comeback for Newbury, draining 19 of his game-high 27 points - two shy of his career game-high - and recorded his first double-double season, ripping down 10 rebounds. In a one possession game, with under a minute to play, Eagles junior Eric Suarez (Brooklyn, NY/Roosevelt) knotted up the contest at 59 before Young drained the walk-off field goal from the top of the key.
Hanson led the way for Daniel Webster recording a double-double, tallying a team-high 23 points and 11 boards. Freshman Keith Speed (Columbus, OH/Reynoldsburg) rounded out the Eagles in double figures netting 10 points off the bench.
With the win, the Nighthawks improve to 4-6 in the conference and 6-15 overall while the Eagles fall to 8-12 and 4-6 in the NECC. Newbury returns to action on Saturday February 13th when they face Southern Vermont at 3:00pm. The Mountaineers defeated the Nighthawks 65-63 on January 28th.
