Nighthawks Fall To Mariners

The Newbury College men's basketball team lost to Mitchell College, 63-62 in the second game of a women's-men's double-header, Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Julio Contreras (Boca Raton, FL/West Boca) paved the way to victory with a team-high 15 points.
Mitchell jumped out to the early lead but freshmen Timothy Young (Brockton, MA/Brockton) and Chris Torres (Brockton, MA/Brockton) helped bring the Nighthawks back. Young drained four treys in the first for 16 of his game-high 21 points while Torres added 10 points of his own.
In the second half, Newbury mounted a valiant come-back lead by freshmen Rondell Best (Brockton, MA/Brockton). Best led the way in the second, recording 10 of his 14 points as the Nighthawks outscored the Mariners, 30-25 in the second. But it was not enough.
Senior Mike DePaolo (Asbury, NJ/North Hunterdon) followed up Contreras with 14 points while junior Drew Norris (Wilson, NC/Steward School) rounded out the Mariners in double digits with 13 points.
With the loss, the Nighthawks fall to 3-6 in conference and 5-15 overall while the Mariners improve to 3-15 overall and 2-7 in the NECC. Newbury will return to the hard-court on Thursday February 11th when they host Daniel Webster College at 7:00pm.
