Daniel Webster Escapes Newbury, 74-73

Nashua - Chris Voukides (Salem, N.H.) drew a foul and sank the front end of a one and one with six seconds remaining in regulation and the Daniel Webster College men's basketball team escaped with a 74-73 victory over Newbury College in a New England Collegiate Conference clash Tuesday night at Mario Vagge Gymnasium.

Senior Adam Landry (Vernon, Conn.) erupted for a season high 26 points adding six rebounds and Voukides finished with 12 as the Eagles (5-7, 1-2 NECC) halted a five-game skid with a much-needed victory.

Eric Suarez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added nine points, five assists, two steals and two blocks, while Chris Hanson (Salem, Mass.) chipped in with eight points.

John Rowley, Jr. (Hartford, Conn.) led the Nighthawks (4-9, 2-2 NECC) with 21 points, while Timothy Young (Brockton, Mass.) added 18 and Samuel Stanford (Somerville, Mass.) knocked down 15 including four three-pointers over the final 4:14 of the game as Newbury almost pulled off a remarkable comeback after trailing by as many as 20 in the second half.

The Eagles, who came out firing in the first half knocking down 50-percent and led by 16 (47-27) at the half, built the lead to 64-47 with 8:27 remaining after a Keith Speed (Columbus, Ohio) three-pointer.

But Newbury staged a massive comeback putting up a 10-0 run over a three minute span and held DWC to just seven points over the final eight minutes.

The game's final minute proved the most nerve wracking. Trailing 71-62, Samuel buried a trey with 1:04 to go for a six point game.

Suarez followed with the front end of a one and one for a 72-65 lead with 38 seconds left but Stanford buried another from outside with 34 seconds left.

After Newbury buried two at the line and Landry followed with one of his own with 28 seconds to go for a 73-70 game, Stanford cooly buried his final from downtown to tie it with 18 seconds remaining.

But Voukides drew a foul just inside the arc burying his first of two and Stanford's last gasp from outside at the buzzer fell just short.

The Eagles finished with a 41-32 advantage on the boards including 18 on the offensive glass.

The Eagles return to action Saturday as they host Becker College in a NECC matchup at 3:00 p.m.

Newbury hosts Wheelock in a NECC game Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
