Nighthawks Falter in Second Half
The Newbury Men's Basketball team dropped a tough NECC conference match-up to the visiting Wildcats of Wheelock College, losing by a score of 79-61. The two teams battled in the first half going almost point-for-point, but the Wildcats would pull away after the break, holding the Nighthawk starters to just 19 points.
Newbury's Kevin Cleveland (Lynn, MA/Lynn) and Samuel Stanford (Somerville, MA/Somerville) led all scorers in the first half with 11 points each. Wheelock received their biggest push from Dan Main (Hopedale, MA/Hopedale) who scored eight points and Sherard Robbins (Malden, MA/Malden) who ripped down eight rebounds, six on the defensive end of the floor. At the break, the score was tied at 30 points a piece.
The second half saw Wheelock chip away as Robbins and teammate Kyle Pierce (Burlington, MA/Burlington) scored 13 and ten points, respectively. Seven other Wildcats put up points compared to the Nighthawks five total scorers after the break.
Newbury's John Rowley Jr. (Hartford, CT/Rockville) and Walky Magloire (Waltham, MA/Waltham) played well for the Nighthawks as Rowley put up all 12 of his points in the second half and Magloire recorded a double-double with ten points and 11 rebounds.
The Nighthawks host the Mariners of Mitchell College on Saturday for a game beginning at 2:00 PM.
