Nighthawks Edge Mountaineers
The Newbury College Men's Basketball team defeated visiting Southern Vermont College by a score of 70-60 tonight at Hellenic College improving the Nighthawks' record to 5-7.
The Mountaineers opened up with a quick three-pointer off the tip and quickly gained momentum going a 10-0 run. The Nighthawks would not be silenced, however, as Walky Magloire (Waltham, MA/Waltham) and Samuel Stanford (Somerville, MA/Somerville) combined for 17 points - nine and eight, respectively. Newbury also received two clutch three-pointers from Robert Foley (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) keeping his team within striking distance, down 32-31 at the half.
The second half brought a powerful Nighthawk rally as they turned up their intensity on defense and kept their composure at the free throw line. Kevin Cleveland (Lynn, MA/Lynn) and John Rowley (Hartford, CT/Rockville) led all scorers after the break with ten and nine points a piece - which included a combined 7-8 connection from the free throw line. Stanford continued his stellar performance with back-to-back steals at the nine minute mark - producing two quick baskets for Newbury and putting the game just out of reach for Southern Vermont.
Joe Karnik (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) led the Mountaineers with a double-double performance of 20 points and ten rebounds. Also playing well for Southern Vermont was Brendan Kordana (Adams, MA/HoosacValley) who chipped in 16 points of his own in addition to four assists.
Newbury travels to Becker College on Saturday for a game beginning at 1:00 PM.
