Nighthawks Defeated on Milestone Night
The Newbury Men's Basketball team dropped their 6th straight game tonight by a score of 84-57 to the visiting Falcons of Fitchburg State College. Despite the loss, the milestones of two Nighthawks were recognized as seniors Kevin Cleveland (Lynn, MA/Lynn) and Walky Magloire (Waltham, MA/Waltham) were honored for reaching 1,000 career points. Cleveland hit his mark on January 27th vs. Gordon College, while Magloire scored his third basket of the game at 11:38 into the first half pushing him one over the exceptional accomplishment. The Newbury teammates would go on to lead all scorers before the break with 10 points a piece.
Their efforts would not be enough, however, as rebounding and second-chance shots proved vital for the Falcons as they ripped down 43 boards and scored 27 second-chance points. Leading the way for Fitchburg was Colin London (Worcester, MA/Doherty) who recorded the game's sole double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Brian Torres (North Dighton, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth) scored a game-high 18 points, 12 of which came in the second half giving Fitchburg the offensive spark they needed to hold onto the lead.
In addition to Cleveland and Magloire who finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively - teammate John Rowley Jr. (Hartford, CT/Rockville) added 14 points of his own, in addition to four assists.
The Nighthawks will look to turn their streak around as they finish their season with seven conference games, traveling next to Southern Vermont College on Saturday, February 7, 2009 for a game beginning at 2:00 PM.
