Schiavone to Play in 18th Annual Old Time Baseball Game
Newbury College junior Kyle Schiavone (Wethersfield, Conn.) is playing in the 18th Annual Old Time Baseball Game for the second straight year on Thursday August 11th at St. Peter's Field in North Cambridge. He will be wearing the 1901 Baltimore Orioles all black uniform with yellow "O" which former Red Sox utility infielder Lou Merloni wore in the 2008 game.
The Old Time Baseball Game has grown from a friendly fundraiser back in 1994 to a celebration of our national pastime. Hosted by Boston Herald columnist Steve Buckley, the game combines today's game of baseball with the throwback uniforms of the last century. Just like a scene out of "Field of Dreams" some of the top collegiate ball players in Greater Boston get back to playing just a fun, neighborhood game of baseball under Danehy Park's bright lights.
It is an honor to be chosen for the Old Time Baseball Game. In 2010, wearing the uniform of the 1920s semi-pro South Philadelphia Hebrew Association, Schiavone played alongside of Matt Gedman, the son of former Red Sox fan favorite Rich Gedman.
Completing his second year at Newbury, Schiavone helped the Nighthawks to their best record (18-17) breaking single season-highs in 10 categories in the process. Primarily anchoring the Nighthawk outfield in centerfield, Schiavone is a career .287 hitter with seven doubles, three triples and three homeruns from the middle of the line-up in his two years wearing Green and Gold.
We urge Nighthawk Nation to come out and support one of our own! Admission to the game is free but officials are encouraging fans to bring lawn chairs or blankets and get there early because space fills up rapidly along both baselines.
