Nighthawks Soar Past Hawks
Leicester, Mass.- First baseman Alex Chetelat (Farmington, Conn.) went three for five driving in three baserunners as the Newbury College baseball team pounded out seventeen hits to defeat Becker College 10-5 in New England Collegiate Conference baseball action Friday afternoon.
Newbury got the scoring started in the top of the third when they hit eight straight singles off Becker starting pitcher Errick Maddern (West Haven, Conn.) leading to six runs. Chetelat and Kyle Schiavone (Wethersfield, Conn.) each drove in a pair of runs in the inning.
The Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the third on a Keith Kandel (Fresno, Calif.) RBI single down the left field line, making the score 6-1. Becker continued to chip away at the Nighthawks lead in the bottom of the fourth when Weston Meehan (Thomson, GA.) scored from third on a wild pitch.
The Hawks manufactured two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull within two runs at 6-4, but Newbury put together a four run top of the sixth to bury the Hawks for good.
Chetelat led the Nighthawks at the plate going 3 for 5 with three RBI.
Freshman southpaw Shawn Marcelle (Bristol, VT.) pitched four and two-thirds innings of relief to earn his fifth win of the season. Marcelle allowed just one run on three hits as the Nighthawks improved to 17-13 overall and 8-6 in the NECC.
Errick Maddern took the loss for Becker after pitching five and two-thirds innings, allowing ten runs on thirteen hits. Todd Tompkins (West Haven, Conn.), Austin Phillips (Thomson, GA.) and Tom Natoli (Suffern, N.Y.) had two hits apiece. The loss drops Becker to 17-9 overall and 8-5 in the NECC.
The victory improves the Nighthawks to 8-6 in the conference and 17-13 overall while the Hawks fall to 8-5 in the NECC and 17-9 overall. Newbury returns to action on Monday April 25th to complete the season series with a double-header against the Hawks in Leicester, Mass.
