JumbosDefeat Newbury 17-4 In Rain-Shortened Game
MEDFORD -- The first 10 Tufts University batters reached based in the first inning and the Jumbos scored 12 runs in their first at bat on their way to a 17-4 rain-shortened victory against Newbury College on Wednesday afternoon.
Visiting Newbury had a productive first inning of their own,
scoring two unearned runs. Sophomore 1B Alex Chetelat (Farmington,
CT) hit an RBI single.
In Tufts' 12-run first inning, 16 batters came to the plate. Junior
DH Ben Walkley (Trumbull, CT) hit a two-run double in his first at
bat, and junior CF David Orlowitz (Wakefield, MA) cleared the bases
with a double in his second at bat of the inning.
Tufts added a run in the second inning when junior SS David
LeResche (St. Louis, MO) hit a two-out single and scored the third
of his four runs in the game on a double by junior LF Ian Goldberg
(Lake Forest, IL).
Freshman DH Justin MacCutcheon (Woburn, MA) hit an RBI double for
the Nighthawks in the fourth, making 13-3. However, Tufts added
four more in the bottom of the inning, including a two-run double
by LeResche and the third RBI double of the game by Goldberg.
Sophomore Joseph Guidi (Derry, NH) walked and scored for Newbury in
the fifth.
Tufts junior righty Dave Ryan (Trumbull, CT) earned his third win,
allowing one earned run and striking out seven in five innings.
Tufts had 16 hits in their four times at bat, with all nine
starters recording at least one hit each.
Chetelat and freshman SS Russell DeMatties (Hamden, CT) had two
hits each for the visitors. Sophomore pitcher Steven Saia (Avon,
MA) faced four batters and got three outs in the fourth.
The game was called after four and a half innings. Tufts improved
to 22-5, while Newbury dropped to 6-23.
